First horizontal air bag press
(Redirected from Wine History/First horizontal air bag press.)
Date or time period: 1957
Penfolds introduce the first air bag press into Australia, allowing greater control over pressing, especially for white wine production.
This type of press had earlier been developed by WIllmes in Germany in 1951. A key principle was that the use of a central inflating bladder resulted in a thin cake around the circumference of the press drum that was quicker to press.
