Elucidation of canopy management principles
Date or time period: 1960s
From the 1960s, the principles of canopy management were elucidated by Shaulis by showing that increased exposure of both leaves and bunches to radiation could result in increase fruit yield and quality; the Geneva Double Curtain (GDC) training (trellis) system arose from this work ─ this was the first divided canopy system, within-canopy shade was reduced by dividing dense canopies on wide spacing into two pendant canopies and yield was almost doubled
